Dr. Larry Bucshon receives Indianapolis Star endorsement

For the U.S. House of Representatives, the Star Editorial Board endorses: Larry Bucshon

Republican Larry Bucshon, a medical doctor by profession, has shown considerable growth in his first two years in the House. Swept into office in the strong Republican tide of 2010, Bucshon was overly dogmatic at times in his first run for Congress.

Now, he's much better versed on the challenges facing the nation and has a deeper appreciation for the complexities of those issues.

As a member of the House Transportation Committee, Bucshon filled a critical role in winning an increase in Indiana's share of federal highway funding from 92 cents on the dollar to a record high of 97 cents. In fact, Indiana's entire congressional delegation, with Bucshon at the point, came together to make that happen.

Democratic challenger Dave Crooks served effectively for 12 years in the General Assembly and certainly has the credentials to lead well in Congress. Unfortunately, during this campaign, he's emphasized arguments for trade protectionism that, although designed to safeguard Indiana's manufacturing base, could be devastating to the state's agricultural, pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors.

Libertarian Bart Gadau also is on the ballot.

The Star endorses Larry Bucshon for a second term.
